“Silent Companion” is ushered in with tranquil confidence, the lush woodwind-like samples building beautifully as the throbbing-heartbeat percussion provides a rhythmic foundation as the keys and soulful vocals trickle in. Ellis Rhodes’ vocals, deeply moving, make the motions with some wordless croons, eventually assuming a prominent lead role fondly reminiscent of Tom Krell/How to Dress Well. The sparse guitar twangs that follow add even more to the riveting soundscape. This is a lushly brilliant piece from Rhodes, who wrote an entire EP this summer and considers this one of the catchier tracks from it.
