Flaunt’s track “Restraint” stood out last month for its chilling atmospheres, conjuring up its own vein of swamp-rock with multi-vocal layering and ominous synth pads. For variety’s sake, “Messiah” shows a slight stylistic turn for the duo comprised of Justin Jennings and Joseph Vitterito — starting with a church choir and descending into husky-voiced, Beck-esque rock with clangy guitar lines and suave vocal maneuvers. With melodic vocal backings that remind of Incubus-era nostalgia, the central hook provides a nice touch to the gritty and crunchy verses, where twangy bass lines and familiarly swampy guitars combine for another atmospheric success.
