“Bleach” from alternative trio Sister Wanzala succeeds in merging the group’s seemingly disparate musical influences. The brothers who make up the Bradford, UK outfit cite everyone from Steely Dan to D’Angelo to Joy Division as acts they admire. This melding of various sounds is a genre the brothers have deemed “Cold Funk”, and they’re definitely on to something.
The reverberating guitars add an iciness to the warm vocal melodies and bass groove that plays out like a ’70s funk jam. You can just as easily dance to “Bleach” as sit around and cry to it. But Sister Wanzala is far from depressing, and when a band has stumbled onto a fresh sound like this, there’s only reason to rejoice.
