Like any New York City rock band worth its salt, Mons Vi has grit. The Brooklyn outfit, masterminded by Matthew Hershoff, draws influence from Big Apple forefathers like the Strokes and the Velvet Underground. “Falling” from their first EP, which came out last month, features crunchy guitars and well-paced garage-rock fervor that meshes youthful enthusiasm with nonchalant melodic cool; Hershoff’s melodies have a wistfulness that make the 24-year-old sound wise beyond his years. His inherent pop sensibilities make the simple hook (“I’m falling”) into an ear-warming chorus that sticks around memorably once the fuzz fades. Keep your radar on these guys.
