“What Happened?” is a full-bodied rocker from Connar Ridd (FREAK), a UK-based singer/songwriter who touts an interesting sound on the release; stutter-y vocal and percussive effects, fierce distorted guitar riffs, and a clanging rhythm section result in an exhilarating soundscape that reminds of both The Arctic Monkeys’ swagger (on heavier efforts like “The Blond-O-Sonic Shimmer Trap“) as well as the heavy guitar-driven rock of Queens of the Stone Age — certainly great comparisons for anyone, much more a brand new project that just released its first EP, What Happened?. “Someone Help Me” is equally excellent, with some great brass-led exultation.
