Kevin Jenkins produces a smooth blend of soul and R&B that features effervescent brass and smooth vocals, like a polished reboot of late ’80s R&B pop propelled by artists like The Style Council. Like that group’s frontman, Paul Weller, Jenkins has an eclectic range of influences, which stretch from Michael Jackson to BB King. The Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter has a new album, Step Inside, that serves as his first release with vocals. The track “What Comes Around” is one of many highlights, with a fervent delivery that helps lead an upbeat melody. The next track, “Can’t Get Over You”, shows his range — it’s a melancholic and soulful ballad for a rainy day. Martin has a lengthy 38-year career that includes shows at Tokyo’s Budokan and NYC’s Madison Square Garden, so it’s hardly a surprise that Step Inside is a smoothly delectable success.
