Fresh off last year’s LP Interstellar, extractor of ’80s nostalgia Frankie Rose has a new album on the way. Before the new one, Herein Wild, drops on September 24th, take a listen to one of its tracks, a cover of goth/punk group the Damned’s “Street of Dreams”. It’s the second track revealed off the album, after the beautiful string-adorned “Sorrow” was released a few weeks ago. As for “Street of Dreams”, Rose’s interpretation of the goth classic is laced with nocturnal synth pads, trickling guitar arpeggios, and a gyrating post-punk rhythm section that coincides with the period she is impersonating. Her vocals tend to usually resemble a ghostly soul, taken at a young age and forever retaining a youthful yet nonchalant vocal tone. The chorus – with its wordless crooning and ascending guitar scratches – are a stellar contrast to the relatively barren push of the verses. It’s a haunting success from an artist whose artistic vision continues to strengthen after many years at the helm of successful rock projects like Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls, and the Vivian Girls. It should be fun digging into Herein Wild when it drops next month, as is the norm with Frankie Rose efforts.
