The initial verses of “Case & Point” appear more understated than mostly everything on Smith Westerns’ new album, Soft Will. But by the time it launches into an enchanted chorus with wailing guitars and weeping organs, it compares easily to the album’s rollicking heights. Included on the 7″ single for album track “Varsity”, “Case & Point” is a powerful showing despite its b-side classification. It contains several Smith Westerns staples: a contagious guitar solo acting as a bridge in the middle, an effervescent hook, and a structural balance that provides predictable enjoyment. I actually prefer “Case & Point” to half the tracks on Soft Will. A great track, b-side or not.
