Atlanta-based Mood Rings produces a lo-fi gauze of electronica that sits perfectly on Mexican Summer’s chillwave-friendly roster. The hypnotic “The Line” is off the group’s upcoming album VPI Harmony, out June 25th. It centers around a chorus that plays like a swift kick to the gut – “Tonight’s the night you live the line / I’m not surprised you broke the line.” Heavily reverbed guitars creep forward, as wispy synth pads float dreamily in an arpeggiated lull. Especially when the vocals assume high-pitched gear past the two-minute mark, comparisons to Ariel Pink are evident, even if the synth arsenal is more reminiscent of John Maus’ works. This is a stellar introduction to Mood Rings and their upcoming album, VPI Harmony.
