Smatterings of trickling Afro-pop and gargling bass-driven dance are present throughout Deafkid’s “Vigilante”, a striking new track from the duo of Flo Sauvaire and Chris Lockington. The two met while assembling live bands for British hip-hop artist Ghostpoet, who they played for live between 2009 and 2012. They also provided their production talents to Ghostpoet’s 2011 album Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam, which was nominated for the Mercury Prize that year (losing to PJ Harvey). This experience has contributed immensely to a polished gem like “Vigilante”, which moves swiftly and thunderously through an ever-changing palate that meshes organic sounds with electronic experimentation. The exotically empowering “Vigilante” makes the duo of Deafkid a name to look out for this year. Their first single, “Talk/Pig” has been featured by the likes of NME and Zane Lowe, and can be heard below:
