Wavves’ new track “Demon to Lean On” is the first to be heard off the duo’s upcoming album Afraid of Heights, out March 26th on Mom + Pop. It sounds like an exhilarating ode to ’90s rock music, in a realm somewhere between Green Day’s alternative-punk and Weezer’s thunderous power-pop — referring to early releases from both groups, of course. “Demon to Lean On” shows the impressive sustaining range of Nathan Williams’ voice here. He initially leads over strutting bass and guitar, complemented abruptly by an excitable blast of distortion at the one-minute mark. “Holding a gun to my head, so send me an angel, or bury me deeply instead,” he sings during the ensuing chorus, his nasally exuberance reflective of Gordon Gano or Billie Joe Armstrong. “Demon to Lean On” is a blast of vintage energy, one that should get the duo’s diehard fanbase even more excited for Afraid of Heights.
According to the press release: “The general theme of the record is depression and anxiety, being death-obsessed and paranoid of impending doom. I feel like the narration is almost schizophrenic if you listen front to back; every word is important, even the constant contradictions and lack of self-worth. That’s all a part of this record-questioning everything not because I’m curious, but because I’m paranoid.”
