MP3: Dent May – “Best Friend”

MP3: Dent May – Best Friend

“Best Friend” is an outstanding disco-tinged new track from Mississippi-based Dent May, off his new album, Do Things, out June 12th on Paw Tracks. Formerly known for ukulele-led material, May traded it in for some vintage synths and a drum machine. There’s a touch of Brit-pop here, of the big-personality variety like Pulp and Squeeze. The panting and exuberant chorus delivery is particularly reminiscent of Jarvis Cocker, and a deep funk rhythm like “F.E.E.L.I.N.G. C.A.L.L.E.D. L.O.V.E”.

Like Cocker, May’s vocal delivery is warm and husky enough to fit the soul and disco flavorings. He’s on the more sensual side of recent disco-soul revivalism, with other acts like Hail Social and the recently featured Fly Golden Eagle (hear “Take You There“) touting a higher pitch and more urgent melody. This is a mellower, more patient rendition. It’s a ridiculously infectious track. One of the best I’ve heard all year. I’m now anticipating Do Things quite a bit.
