MP3: Rocket Juice and the Moon – Hey Shooter
I reported a few weeks ago on Rocket Juice and the Moon, the new supergroup headed by Blur/Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, and Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen. Their debut is out March 12th and, with “Shooter”, we get our first peek at their sound. With the sultry vocals of Erykah Badu making a guest appearance, this funk-driven gem is lifted by both her and Flea, whose efforts on bass shine above all other instruments — even the excellent use of brass scattered throughout. It sounds like Albarn has been listening to plenty of Bobby Womack. Get Bootsy Collins on stage for a bass-off and we’re in business.
Tony Allen told MOJO about the self-titled album: “It is all funk. Groove music, music that makes you dance. The audience don’t want to sit and listen, they want to move their bodies.” When asked about the band’s recording process, he said “We don’t say, what are we going to do? We say let’s go for it, and we all play at once… It’s a question of being free of mind.”
