We Are the Works in Progress, Blonde Redhead’s compilation to benefit Japan’s recovery from the March 2011 tsunami and aftermath, has plenty of big names. Among them are Terry Riley, Deerhunter, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Interpol, and The Knife’s Karin Dreijer Andersson. Another is Four Tet, who leads off the compilation with “Moma”. Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) unveiled it today via Soundcloud, which you can stream above.
The track’s intro sounds very aquatic; the airy keyboard mimicks water droplets as minimally choppy snares gently usher in rhythm. A brassy moog synth assumes prominent lead just before the two-minute mark, later to be gradually accented by ambient pad effects. It sounds very typical of Hebden, which means very few will be disappointed. All in all, a savvy opener.
The compilation looks excellent, and proceeds from sales will benefit the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund and Architecture for Humanity. It won’t be released until January 10th, but you can pre-order it here. The vinyl is available on Amazon
