A bit of Dylan is always good for the soul

There’s no need for me to talk much about the influence from Bob Dylan on music. He is one of the most influential artists to ever live, creating masterpieces for over forty years. Love and Theft, released in 2001, was fantastic and recieved much critical acclaim. The fact that it was released on September 11th was ironic but suitable, as Dylan is arguably the greatest American songwriter of all time and is very politically minded. Currently, though his live vocals sound aged (appropriately so), Dylan continues to make new music and his new album, Modern Times, is set to be released on August 29th. It will be his first new album in five years.

Sony recently played the album for a few respectable rock critics, who vaguely described “at least three masterpieces” on the album. I’ve also included two classics that came later in his career, including ‘Hurricane’, which is a profile of the wrongly conviced Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, who was convicted of homicide just because of his race. The song brought fame to the Carter case, and helped him go free in the 1980s. I had to write a four page report on the song in sophomore year of high school, which was one of the only enjoyable papers I had to write! ‘Hurricane’ can be found on Desire. ‘Jokerman’ has such an 80s feel, while still keeping in touch with the classic Dylan feel, found on one of his early 80s albums, Infidels. His new album is one of my most anticipated of 2006 because, well, it’s Bob Dylan.
