With roots spanning across New Zealand, Turkey and Germany, Paper Thieves are an eclectic five-piece of Berlin residents who just released the second single, “Trouble”, from their upcoming album, out in late 2018. Leah Christensen’s vocals guide a quaint beginning of murky bass and mellow keys, accompanied by male vocals just prior to the one-minute mark, where the smooth, nocturnal brass projects a suaveness reminiscent of a spy film. “On my own again,” she sings in the second set of verses, here the trickling guitar work reminding fondly of TOPS. The “trouble, trouble ahead,” hook – with the subtle touch of strings – is also a success. “Trouble” is consuming from start to finish, serving as great indication of Paper Thieves’ promise.
