herMajesty are an indie-pop act out of NYC, whose new single “Weightless” projects a post-disco backbeat with a shimmering, key/synth-laden effervescence. The hook-y refrain – “we are weightless” – easily induces fixation. Recorded over four years and across a variety of locations – Brooklyn, Rochester, Cleveland, Athens, Greece; Wellington, New Zealand and mixed in Berlin by Giovanni Nicoletta – the track is described by the group as “a paean on life, love, and death and its lyrics touch on the limitations that we impose on ourselves, and our capacities to live intimate, loving lives.” It shimmers with a reverence for acts of the past, like Bowie’s more accessible work and R.E.M.’s dreamy beauty, though with an original and modern shine that makes “Weightless” a success for herMajesty.
