Based out of Philly, Mulch Aikens is churning out some seriously impressive sounds. Merging influences culled from “classic disco music and contemporary underground music,” Mulch reminds of Toro y Moi in the supremely melodic, soaring vein of songwriting he pursues on just-released track “Sand Dunes”, a yearning gem off his upcoming release Collected Recordings: 2013-2017. Funky bass and gentle synth caressing comprise the first two minutes, with an exceptional hook emerging at 02:16, when Mulch heightens his vocal pitch alongside ramped-up percussion and playful psych-friendly guitar work. It’s an extremely memorable moment in a track full of them. Vocal passion and melodic wizardry help lead this very strong track from Mulch Aikens, who is undoubtedly fast on the rise.
