“Old Amsterdam” places listeners into nocturnal city streets, with the glistening harps, funk bass, late-night brass and sonorous vocals making for a very enticing and illustrious sound. The track is the new single from Comrade Hat, the project of multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/producer/composer Neil Burns. He calls the title track from his forthcoming mini-album “a lush, bittersweet ode to the eponymous city, bridging old-world nostalgia and knowing, 21st Century detail.” With the mini-album due out this fall, “Old Amsterdam” is a great peek into Comrade Hat’s extraordinary atmospheric grasp, with a chillout lounge-friendly sound that reminds me personally of vibes captured in Destroyer’s “Chinatown”, as well as Manic Street Preachers’ “Miss Europa Disco Dancer”. “Old Amsterdam” is a suavely engineered atmospheric success that shines bright.
