Destroyer will return this November with a new EP entitled Five Spanish Songs, which is precisely what it sounds like. Destroyer’s leader, Dan Bejar, intends to explore the Spanish language after some tired ventures with his native English tongue. “It was 2013. The English language seemed spent, despicable, not easily singable. It felt over for English; good for business transactions, but that’s about it,” he said in a statement. “The only other language I know is Spanish, and the only Spanish songs I really know are those of Sr. Chinarro, led by Antonio Luque.” And as such, the five songs on Five Spanish Songs were written by Luque, along with contributions from Nicolas Bragg and John Collins (Destroyer), in addition to Stephen Hamm, David Carswell, and Josh Wells (Black Mountain).
Bejar further elaborated on his fondness for Luque’s songwriting: “I’ve been a decades-long fan of how he [Luque] conducted his affairs, his strange words, his melodies that have always felt so natural (this is important), his bitter songs about painting the light. Something about them, I knew I could do it.” The Five Spanish Songs EP was produced by JC/DC and recorded at their Vancouver studio earlier this summer. Bejar will also begin a solo acoustic tour in November, for which tickets are selling quickly. Apparently this will be the last time Destroyer is playing live until 2015! That’s unfortunate, but let’s make the most of it:
