As obsolete as warships in the Baltic! These Warships are of the polished Los Angeles variety, with a propensity for crisply sonorous hooks and polished accessibility. “Sleeper Hold”, a highlight off their debut EP Shadows, is an excellent entry to the group, whose closest resemblance is to My Morning Jacket’s rocking side; the vocals compare to a less grizzled Jim James, and there exists a glaring tendency to launch minimally creaking verses into jovially grandiose choruses. Some aspects of Modest Mouse’s punchy and snarling college-rock is also there. Still, Warships pack an original sense of hook-making, especially in the lead chorus where climactic synth pads and guitar trickles overlap over wonderfully vibrant vocals that transform into a wordless wonder.
