From September’s release of their new album Mountaintops (back in September), “Sway” is everything you’ve come to expect from Mates of State: upbeat key-driven melodies as husband-wife duo Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel swap excitable verses. Directed by XXXX, the video is a nod to Lewis’ Caroll’s “Alice in Wonderland”; a girl falls down a rabbit hole and discovers a perfect world, complete with odd green fawn-like creatures.
“Sway” is one of my favorites from them. Surprisingly, it resembles accessible ’80s synth-pop with a flamboyance akin to Bananarama, specifically tracks like “I Heard a Rumor”. Hear the comparison?
